Alistair Coe MLA, Shadow Minister for Youth, has today called on the Minister for Children and Young People, Andrew Barr, to clarify the Government’s position on youth in custody.

Today in committee hearings, an official from the Department of Disability, Housing and Community Services said that youth “liked” being in custody.

Obviously, this is a concerning statement.

“If the system is failing these kids on so many levels, we need to carefully look at the entirety of that system to protect these young people and their families.

“We are keen to work with the government in any attempt to improve the situation.

“The Minister for Children and Young People needs to quickly clarify what the Government’s position on youth in custody is, and what we can do to address the problems,” Mr Coe said.
