After Harrison community members raised concerns, the Assembly passed a motion today calling on the Government to re-align the Well Station Road Extension further to the east, said Alistair Coe MLA, Shadow Minister for Urban Services.
“The Government is proposing an alignment of Well Station Road that would bring the road very close to existing houses in Carpentaria Street and create problems of noise pollution, road safety, and a loss of urban amenity for residents of Harrison,” Mr Coe said.
“The problems for Harrison residents could easily be avoided by re-aligning the road to the east of a small hill opposite Carpentaria Street.
“This eastern alignment would mean that the intersection with Horse Park Drive is safer, that families in Harrison could still use the open space as a playground, and noise issues would be eliminated by a natural sound barrier.
“In the typical arrogant style of the Stanhope Labor Government, they have conducted consultation but ignored what the community has told them.
“For 9 of the 10 day consultation, the wrong email address was given for submissions, providing no or very little access to the correct email. Despite this, between 30 and 40 residents were able to make submissions.
“The Government’s only defence is that there was consultation undertaken in the development of the territory plan, and at that point there were no objections.
“However, this consultation was undertaken before residents even lived in the area and is no justification for the Government taking this course of action.
“Now that the Assembly has passed a motion calling on the Government to re-align the road, I look forward to the community’s concerns being acknowledged and the road being constructed to the eastern alignment,” Mr Coe concluded.
