Alistair Coe MLA, the Shadow Minister for Urban Services, said that the ACT Government has hidden some drastic parking fee rises to come into effect from next Monday, 6 July 2009.

Parking fees are rising 20 per cent in all ACT Government parking machine areas, as announced in the 2009-2010 Budget.

“It was revealed this morning that three car parks will be rezoned from zone B to zone A, meaning an even steeper increases in fees,” Mr Coe said.

“The car park at City West between Gordon Street, Marcus Clarke Street, and Ellery Crescent will be hit the hardest, with a daily parking fee rising from $5 to $9 per day.

“That’s a huge 80 per cent increase.  For 50 working weeks, this accumulates to an extra $1000 a year for commuters.

“Two car parks in Woden – the car park north of Launceston Street and west of Phillip Oval, and the temporary car park east of Philip Oval, will see increases of 67 per cent (from $3.60 a day to $6.00 a day).

“Commuters are being forced to pay for this Government’s years of waste and mismanagement.

“It is unfair to slug people extra for car parking at a time when there is no strategy to improve parking in any of Canberra’s town centres.

Mr Coe said that it wasn’t just car parking fees that were rising, as of today:

  • 11% increase (average) in the price of bus tickets
  • 10% increase in the cost of parking fines
  • 25% increase in the cost of taking car-loads of rubbish to the tip
  • Substantial increases in rates
  • Five extra full-time parking inspectors
