Alistair Coe has called for a debate with regard to order of occupancy rules within the Territory, after a development application was brought to Mr Coe’s attention as Member for Ginninderra.
The comments come after a development application has been submitted to ACTPLA for another construction on the foreshore of Lake Ginninderra. In addition to commercial space, the proposed building includes 15 one-bedroom apartments. The site for redevelopment is the former location of Pizza Hut.
If approved, there are concerns that noise and traffic from nearby businesses could make the location inappropriate for residences. The area is already suffering from a lack of parking, and increased traffic may worsen the situation.
Both Queensland and New South Wales consider the order of occupancy when making decisions regarding noise and other similar complaints.
“Order of occupancy rules can help ensure that existing businesses and residents are given due consideration before changes to an area are approved, or complaints are upheld,” Mr Coe said.
“The Belconnen Town Centre has seen many great developments and many more should follow. We must ensure that all developments, especially those that include residences, are in locations appropriate for all concerned.”
“The Lake Ginninderra Foreshore is a great precinct for entertainment, retail, offices and residences.”
“Clarity would provide certainty for existing businesses and new developers.”
